Education Empowers Us All to be Stewards of A Healthy Home.
Students of Red Feather educational workshops come away with not only the knowledge, tools, and materials to solve minor housing repair needs, but also a greater appreciation for the connection between home maintenance and family health. Our education initiatives and workshops include a variety of lectures, group discussions, and hands-on practice, often using local homes as learning laboratories.

In addition to workshops, we conduct educational outreach to both tribal and non-tribal audiences, providing presentations and informational tables at events, and serving as advisors on various committees.

for Healthy Living
The majority of homes on the Hopi and Navajo Reservations use coal or wood for their main source of heat. Old or unsafe stoves and heating systems are a leading cause of unhealthy indoor air quality and a major contributor to high asthma rates and other health conditions.

In Red Feather’s popular do-it-yourself Healthy Heating course, students learn about heating risks, wood and coal stove maintenance, and heating alternatives, receiving the tools and knowledge necessary to maintain safe home heating systems.

Red Feather Women's DIY Workshops are a crowd favorite (Girls DO have more fun), providing women the opportunity to empower themselves with the tools and techniques to fix and maintain their own homes. 34% of Native households in the US are Female-headed. Giving women the knowledge to carry out home repairs and maintenance is a community-first resource with far reaching impacts, creating safer homes for families in Native communities.

Education Sites
The Red Feather Healthy Heating demonstration site in partnership with Sipaulovi Village on the Hopi Nation showcases a mini-split heat pump and a solar air furnace.  The site allows community members to learn more about the technologies and experience first hand how they work.

for Resilient Communities
Responding to the  COVID-19 pandemic, Red Feather partnered with nonprofit LavaMaeˣ to bring workshops and instructional videos to our tribal partners, teaching Hopi and Navajo communities to build the LavaMaeˣ  high capacity handwashing systems, providing WASH (Water Access, Sanitation and Hygiene) programs to areas without running water.
