Building Safe Homes and Resilient Communities
The vast majority of the work we do is accomplished after the NHRN program has completed its function of identifying client needs and the resources which may fulfill them. Our HHESI program provides the bigger structural home repairs needed to provide a family with a secure and comfortable future.
A significant secondary benefit of this work is the jobs created for tribal members who are hired to implement housing repairs. The more opportunities provided for the local workforce, the larger the impact on local economies. As economies grow, poverty levels are reduced, which in turn can help address systemic housing inequalities. |
The Red Feather Weatherization program provides free, energy saving weatherization services to low-moderate income families living on the Hopi and Navajo Reservations who are Arizona Public Service customers in order to reduce their utility bills and improve the comfort and health of their homes. Services can include insulation of attic, walls and/or floors, repair of broken windows or damaged drywall, air sealing including weather-stripping and caulking, LED lighting upgrades, HVAC repair or replacement, and Energy Efficiency appliance swap-outs. |
Accessibility ramp building and home modifications are a vital way we make sure the elderly and mobility-impaired members of our community are taken care of. Being able to easily access a front door or move within one’s home has a huge impact on the ease of daily life. Red Feather ramps are ADA-accessible and built to last.

From minor plumbing repairs to bathroom upgrades to the occasional composting toilet, Red Feather works to improve WASH access across both Hopi and Navajo. This includes our delivery of mobile-handwashing stations to families and areas without running water, and supporting community-led water delivery efforts and water storage options for families, including work with Source solar water systems. |
From mini-split AC/heater combos to solar furnaces for supplementary heat, Red Feather NHRN case-managers can connect clients to safe, efficient heating solutions.
A mini-split heat pump is an electrically powered heating and cooling system that operates at half the cost of electric space heating. Mini-splits are safe options for tribal elders, individuals with asthma or respiratory disease, and any individuals wanting to remove solid fuel burning from their home. A solar furnace provides free, zero-emissions heat while the sun is up. The solar furnace is intended to be used as a supplemental heating source, producing about the same amount of heat as a large space heater. Reducing the need for solid-fuel burning heat sources, they can improve indoor air quality and save money. |

and Structural Repairs
For homes that qualify for more major repairs, Red Feather facilitates construction, roofing, plumbing, window and door replacement and structural repairs needed for health or safety of the inhabitants. These programs are limited - we always need additional support of unrestricted funds to carry out the housing repairs needed by our clients. CLICK HERE to donate to housing repairs. |
Many Hopi and Navajo households are currently using inefficient and improperly installed wood and coal stove heating systems. Years of coal burning have caused severe damage to the stoves and flue/chimney systems. This results in wasted fuel, poor indoor air quality, and health and safety risks from fire and carbon monoxide. Stove swap-out programs allow old wood stoves to be swapped out with EPA certified clean-burning wood stoves, improving efficiency, safety and air purity, reducing dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning and asthma.

Dear Red Feather, I want to thank you, your company, your workers for coming to my aide, in time of dire need. On October 1, 2018 during the prolonged rain, my house roof started leaking rain water into two bed rooms, living room, dining room, and walls. I was desperate for any help or advice. I asked the local chapter government and the job training program for workers to repair my house. There was none. Everything became hopeless…. One week later I was told my request (with Red Feather) is approved, and they will seal the leaking roof .. seal all other leaks, replace broken windows, seal the doors …The workers were very friendly and understanding. I am very grateful to your program.” Robert L. Begay - Korean Veteran |
