People-centered Housing Solutions for Native Homeowners
NHRN is a case management program that helps families and communities resolve home health and safety risks. Case managers first listen deeply to client needs, then determine what resources could be leveraged to provide solutions.
Need a community referral? See our list of Community Resources. Qualified homeowners who need more extensive structural repairs will be assessed for our Healthy Home Energy and Safety Improvements program. We encourage clients to contribute their own resources to help solve the issue at hand. The NHRN program provides Healthy Home Kits, Resources and Services to meet the needs of inhabitants as they define them.

We believe tribal elders should have all the support they need to safely age on tribal lands. Our aging in place services provide everything from shower chairs to grab bars to make homes elder-friendly.
I am very thankful for the work that has been done. The (minisplit) unit that was installed keeps my home nice and cool… I no longer get headaches from the heat, I feel a lot better” - Eleanor |

These kits can include everything from wood stove thermometers to wood moisture meters to improve healthy heating from wood and coal stoves, to life-saving carbon monoxide and smoke alarms. Students of our Healthy Heating workshops get a Healthy Heating Kit, and these tools are accessible via mail during pandemic shutdowns. |

For many families reliant on wood burning stoves for heat, access to emergency firewood in the winter months can be lifesaving. Especially following the closure of a local coal mine in 2018, heat insecurity has increased, especially for vulnerable populations unable to gather and cut their own firewood.
The firewood program has evolved into partnerships with NACOG, National Forest Foundation, Conservation Legacy’s Hopi Ancestral Lands Program, The AMB Foundation and others, providing hundreds of cords of firewood to Hopi and Navajo households. This is the program that makes me take calls at any hour night or day…” Read Program Coordinator Darleen’s missive from the frontlines of firewood delivery |
The demand far exceeds the limited federal dollars allocated to tribes to assist with housing. Non-governmental organization resources that are available to help with home repairs are limited. Those that do exist are difficult to find, particularly for families on reservations who often don’t have electricity or running water, let alone internet access. Once found, applying for assistance can be a lengthy and complicated process that is difficult to navigate. Red Feather case managers know where resources can be found and understand the process for accessing them. As far as we know, there are no other non-profits assisting Navajo or Hopi families either directly with home repairs, or helping them to find the resources to address them.” |
