Elderly Housing Initiative

Red Feather’s American Indian Sustainable Housing Initiative also offers elders the opportunity to obtain the dream of homeownership through our Elderly Housing Initiative. Typically, in order for Red Feather to assist a family with the construction of a new home, the future homeowner must obtain a low-income, low-interest loan towards the purchase of needed materials. For elderly tribal members, however, this is an extremely difficult, if not impossible, task.

While maintaining our focus on starter homes for young families, Red Feather staff works with reservation communities to identify elderly living in unsafe, substandard conditions, and then works with their fellow tribal members to construct a safe, efficient straw bale home for the elder in need. The home not only provides a place of dignity for the individual to live, but it also helps strengthen the fabric of the community by allowing tribal members to play the lead role in assisting an elder in need of proper shelter.

Red Feather supporters can play a major role in this effort by donating directly to the Elderly Housing Initiative. Funds raised will go directly towards the purchase of the approximate $55,000 in materials needed to construct an elder’s home. Please send all tax-deductible donations to the address below. We thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity.
