Community Development
Red Feather’s work has always gone far beyond just building houses. The construction of homes is seen as a vehicle for building positive relationships. These relationships take many different forms and offer a bridge between communities that have historically been divided. From Red Feather’s collaboration with tribal community members and institutions, to non-native volunteers gaining a better understanding of indigenous cultures and making new friends in the process. Our work is really first and foremost, about the people.
Through long-term commitments to the Hopi and Northern Cheyenne nations, we are steadily working to support and train tribal members who are interested in tackling housing issues within their own communities. By working with local advisory groups, organizations and individuals, Red Feather is helping address housing needs from “the inside out,” seeking out and supporting assets and resources that already exist within each of these distinct communities. Ultimately, lasting change can only come from within the community. Through community outreach and development, Red Feather offers some of the tools and resources to help facilitate that change.
